Less than half of the states in the United States require motorcyclists to wear helmets. California is one of those states. Drivers and passengers on a motorcycle are required to wear protective headwear that is Department of Transportation compliant.
True Department of Transportation compliant helmets generally have thick padding, full face protection, and are at least three pounds in weight.
There are a lot of replications out there that are not compliant with the standards. These are typically lightweight and offer minimal protection.
Police reports did not state if Islas was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. There was no indication that he was wearing any type of personal protective gear.
The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing at this time. Police are working to determine the cause of the accident that lead to the death of Islas.
