A Ypsilanti Township man was killed riding his bicycle near his home on the afternoon of March 21. Police were called to the scene of the accident, which occurred around 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Packard Road and North Hewitt Road.
Based on the reports released regarding the details of the accident, 70-year-old Gregory Detmer was riding his bicycle across Packard Road when an approaching vehicle saw the man in the road and swerved out of the way. A second vehicle that was behind the first driver did not have enough time or room to swerve and struck Detmer.

The report did not indicate if Detmer was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident or not. It is not illegal or a requirement by law for a bicyclist to wear a helmet while on the road. It is for personal safety that the state suggests someone wear a helmet.
Medical personnel pronounced Detmer dead at the scene of the accident due to the injuries he sustained in the accident. The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office has not speculated that impairment was a factor in the accident.
The Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the accident. However, they have not issued any charges or citations as a result of their investigation thus far.
