The crash occurred when the two men, who were in a Volvo, were traveling southbound on Hart Road. A semi-truck, driven by 39-year-old Harinder Chhina, was going west on Highway 132. When the two vehicles came to the intersection, they collided.
The semi pushed the Volvo forward. Both of the vehicles came to rest in a field at the southwest corner of the intersection.
Based on an aerial map of the area, there are traffic lights at the intersection where the accident occurred. The reports that have been released did not indicate which direction had the green light at the time of the accident.
Avina and Garibay-Avina were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the semi, Chhina, was not injured in the accident.
No specific information has been released regarding the accident at this time. The California Highway Patrol does not believe that impairment was a factor in the accident, though.
Troopers were not sure of the relation between the men in the Volvo, but the information should be released to the public once the investigation into the accident is completed. There have not been any charges or citations issued at this time.
