Axtell ISD Superintendent Dr. JR Proctor broke the news about the coach’s death in a Facebook post.
He said the 31-year-old was in Huckabay visiting friends when the crash happened.
Baseballers and students who knew the coach gathered on the baseball field in Axtell on Saturday to share fond memories of how Bankston affected their lives.
Notes and flowers were placed on a memorial.
Proctor said the coach had made a significant impact on the school in the year that he worked there.
Parents were encouraged to reach out to high school counselor Ashley Hardin if they or their children were in distress because of the death. Hardin will offer virtual counseling services, likely because of the need for physical distancing to combat the spread of COVID-19.
Bankston played all-district and all-county baseball in Burleson where he grew up. He also played at Abilene Christian University before moving on to become a coach. He was the head baseball coach at Hamilton High School from 2015 to 2018.
Axtell played to a 4-5 record in this year’s season and had a 2-0 district record before play ended due to the pandemic.
In his last public Facebook post on April 17, Bankston thanked his players for their effort throughout the shortened season.
If more details are released about the deadly crash, it will be included in subsequent accident reports.
