Authorities said Ayala was driving north on U.S. 880 at 5:40 p.m. when he got into a single-vehicle crash. After the incident, Ayala alleged exited his vehicle and stood on the roadway.
Ayala then was struck by two vehicles. One of the vehicles then struck a third vehicle that was in the area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Ayala died from his injuries before he could be transported for medical treatment, authorities said.
The drivers of each vehicle that struck Ayala also suffered minor injuries, the California Highway Patrol reported. Both drivers, neither of whom were publicly identified, were taken to area hospitals for treatment, troopers said.
Authorities advised drivers and other passengers in vehicles involved in wrecks to stay in the vehicle with their seatbelts fastened, if at all possible. If the vehicle still is operational, it should be moved as close to the shoulder as possible to get out of the way of traffic.
