Minutes before the crash, a 911 call about a person matching Bandin’s description reported that he left his home in an impaired state. The police launched a search for him, and they were interviewing family members on Pershing Avenue when a call about the ATV collision came in.
At the scene, the female driver of a Honda Civic involved in the accident told officers that she was attempting to turn into Glennwilde from west of Honeycutt when the crash happened. The driver said that the ATV was going at top speed without its headlight on, and she could not avoid it.
The officers found Bandin conscious at the scene, but with blood coming out of his head and limbs. Despite the wounds, the suspect was coherent enough to answer basic questions. An officer at the scene said he could not get close enough to see if the man was intoxicated for fear of COVID-19.
The medics at the scene took Bandin to Chandler Regional Medical Center for treatment of his wounds. Afterward, the police took the man into custody on suspicion of DUI on a U.S. Marshall federal warrant, hence the drunk driving attorney.
The result of the suspect’s blood test would determine if the charges would lead to a trial.
