A man sustained serious injuries and another suffered minor injuries in a crash that took place on the I-74. The incident occurred on Thursday, September 24 as per the accident reports. The man with serious injuries was identified as Anthony Abernathy, 36, of Mississippi.
According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, Abernathy was driving a semi truck westbound along the I-74. Near the milepost 84, his vehicle crossed the center line and came into the path of the eastbound traffic. The semi then collided with another semi truck traveling in the eastbound lane.

The driver of the other semi truck involved in the collision was identified as Scott Williams, 58, of Indiana. Williams sustained relatively minor injuries in the crash. When the first responders and paramedics arrived, he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Anthony Abernathy sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident. He was airlifted from the scene of the crash to a hospital.
The two-vehicle collision happened in the evening and was reported to the authorities at around 5 p.m. Following the crash, ISP shut down the eastbound lanes of the I-74 for on-site clean-up and investigations. The lanes remained close for nearly ten hours and were reopened only at 3:15 a.m.
ISP continues to investigate the incident. The focus of the investigations, at this point, is to determine what caused Abernathy to cross the median and hit the oncoming vehicle. ISP has now ruled out speed or alcohol for now. Subsequent accident reports will show if any formal charges are filed in this case.
