The teen driver sustained moderate injuries, and responding medics airlifted her to Kern Medical to receive treatment. A passenger in the Nissan, identified as 20-year-old Bakersfield resident, Shawn Santos, suffered minor wounds and received treatment at the scene.
The CHP said that drugs or (and) alcohol do not appear to have factored in the crash. Officer Adam Taylor said that Paniagua and Santos were wearing seatbelts at the time. There is no additional information.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. According to the Center for Disease Control, teenage accidents are preventable if young people follow the strategies put in place by law enforcement and traffic agencies.
Some of these strategies involve educating teenage drivers on the dangers of driving impaired, the importance of seatbelt usage, and operating within the speed limits of each roadway. Inexperienced teen drivers should drive with the supervision of an adult and avoid driving at night or during the early hours of the morning.
