29-year-old Jonathan Rivera was driving the Honda and veered into the right shoulder crashing into the Atlas. The accident occurred close to 3:30 a.m.
Police have not determined why the Atlas was sitting on the right shoulder and not moving.
There were four occupants in the Atlas at the time of the accident. The two back passengers, Francisca and Trinidad, were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange where they succumbed to their injuries about an hour after the accident.
Reports stated that they died within minutes of each other. The relationship between the occupants of the Atlas has not been made public at this time.
The other two victims in the Atlas were 93-year-old Gregorio Solis and 52-year-old Gregorio Vasquez. They were transported to OC Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for the treatment of minor injuries sustained in the accident.
Rivera was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. He sustained significant injuries in the accident. The California Highway Patrol suspects that Rivera was under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at the time of the accident.
They have not made an official statement as to why he veered off the road and into the shoulder.
At this time, he has not been charged for any crimes. The accident is currently still under investigation. It is possible that once the investigation is complete, Rivera will find himself with charges as a result of driving under the influence.
