The deceased lost his life while trying to pull out a felled tree that was wedged in another three. While doing this, the tractor flipped backward onto him, killing him instantly. Benie’s neighbor helped in pulling the tractor off him, but he was already dead.
While using a tractor in the farm, some hazards could occur, including runovers and rollovers, machinery power take-offs (PTOs) unguarded, hydraulics causing crush injuries, poor ergonomics causing back strain, noise-induced hearing loss, falls as a result of working at heights and stair, poor operator skills.
It is recommended that farmers take some safety measures. These include maintenance of the tractors and related implements and attachments in line with industry standards and manufacturers’ requirements.
Based on accident reports involving tractors and farm machinery, it is not advisable for anyone to ride on the steps or on implements that are attached to tractors while the tractor is in motion. Farmers must also ensure tractors are fitted with non-slip, side-access steps that are in good condition.
Practicing these recommendations and some other necessary tips would significantly reduce the number of tractor accidents that occur on the farm.
