A preliminary investigation uncovered that the 18-wheeler driven by 47-year-old Daniel Farias of El Paso was heading east in the 100-block of West 1H-20. At the same time, a Dodge Ram driven by Coloni was heading west on the same roadway.
The young man was driving on the wrong side of the road with his headlights off, and he collided head-on with the 18-wheeler. The deceased sustained severe injuries from the crash and the medics at the scene pronounced him dead.
The OPD did not reveal if Farias sustained any injury in the accident. Further investigation by the police uncovered that the Dodge was reported stolen out of Ector County, and the inquiry remains active.
Under Texas law, a person who causes a head-on collision is liable to face criminal prosecution if death occurs or a civil lawsuit if an injured victim so desires. When the offender dies, the victim can sue his or her estate for compensation and would need to hire a car injury attorney.
