According to reports, a 17-year-old girl with a provisional license was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer north on Nimitz when the 18-year-old man sitting in the front passenger’s seat reached over and grabbed the steering wheel, moving it from side to side. The startled driver snatched the wheel and pulled hard to the right, causing the Ford to run off the right side of the road and crash into a bridge abutment. It then rolled over, ejecting the front-seat passenger.
The driver and the front-seat passenger were rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Two back-seat passengers fled the scene on foot.
Police will likely charge the driver for violating the terms of her provisional license, which forbids minors from driving between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., or transporting passengers under the age of 20 unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or licensed driver older than 25.
The front-seat passenger could also face charges.
