The California Highway Patrol said the accident took place around 7:30 p.m. to the south of Rapley Ranch Road in the area of the Thomas Fogerty Winery.
CHP officials revealed that a white BMW 540i was traveling south when the speeding driver lost control of the vehicle as he navigated a curve. This forced the car to travel off the right-hand side of the road and strike a tree. It then rolled back into the southbound lane.
Gibson passed away at the scene of the accident while the unnamed driver, also 27, was airlifted to Stanford Hospital.
He was listed in critical condition as of Saturday and is expected to face charges of driving under the influence and causing an injury.
Investigators said it is likely that speed, drugs and/or alcohol played a role in the accident. However, no further details were revealed.
The accident forced the closure of both lanes of Skyline Boulevard for around four hours.
Anyone who saw the crash has been asked to call Officer Taylor Barry at the CHP’s Redwood City office at (650) 369-6261.
In 2019, California recorded about 3,540 traffic deaths and most of the vehicles involved were passenger cars. This was a reduction from the 3, 651 fatalities recorded in 2018.
