The vessel launched from the ramp earlier that morning, and while returning from the Dry Fork inlet, it began to sink. There were only two life jackets on board, and the boat’s occupants gave one to the only minor with them and the other to Larkins. The man failed to use his for unknown reasons, and never made it back to the shore with the three others.
The sheriff’s office later recovered the victim’s body from the lake, but the boat remains missing. The investigators are actively trying to discover what caused the vessel to sink. They asked witnesses to come forward and give their statement to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call the listed line.
The SCSO advised all recreational boaters to have a wearable life jacket for everyone onboard their vessel, and ensure it is readily accessible. Additionally, all recreational boats over 16 feet must have a Type IV throwable floatation device.
