According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), urban and rural fatal vehicle crashes differ because of the density of road networks, land use, and travel patterns.
It is estimated that 19 percent of US citizens live rurally, and 30 percent of vehicle miles traveled are in rural locations, but nearly half of the crash fatalities happen in rural areas.
Despite these statistics, there has been a decline, proportionately, in deaths occurring in rural areas; from 2000 through 2018, the number dropped 61 percent.
- 72 percent of rural fatalities happen on roads with speed limits 55 mph or higher.
- 36,560 people died in vehicle crashes in 2018.
- The rate of crash deaths is twice as high in rural versus urban areas.
- 56 percent of SUV occupant deaths occurred in rural areas.
- 70 percent of pedestrian and bicycle deaths happened in urban areas.
