Investigations carried out on the scene of the accident indicated that the vehicle involved was a 2009 Toyota Camry driven by 25-year-old Colbert Dee Murphy-Long. The car was heading westbound on Lake Shore when for unknown reasons, it drove off the road.
The reports stated that the Camry then smashed into a line of trees positioned on the side of the roadway. The preluding events have not been established, but officers said the car came to rest in between the trees, leaving Murphy-Long pinned in the wreckage.
First responders showed up a while later and extricated the motorist from the severely dented vehicle. They discovered he suffered fatal injuries in the accident, which claimed his life at the scene. The sole passenger sustained major injuries as well, and medics transported him to an area hospital, where he later passed away. The reports failed to disclose the identity of the passenger.
Detectives did not immediately establish whether impairment was a factor in the accident. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Traffic officers urge commuters to strive always to report car accidents whenever witnessed.
