As the driver fled, a police chase ensued. However, the officer pursuing the car briefly called off the chase. The vehicle drove across the Tracy Boulevard and as its driver was trying to get back the westbound 205 on-ramp, he appears to have lost control. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
The second male traveling in the vehicle was identified as Donald Edwards. The two females in the vehicle were identified as Patterson High School students.
All four occupants of the vehicle sustained critical injuries in the collision. As paramedics and first responders arrived, attempts were made to perform life-saving measures. However, all four succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead on the scene of the accident.
The fatal crash happened five minutes after the CHP trooper called off the pursuit. Subsequent accident reports may shed more light on how and why the crash occurred.
