Reports state that 86-year-old Mary Jane Beall was driving on North Jefferson Street in her 1999 Honda Accord when she attempted to turn left on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
21-year-old Devonta’ Edwards of Eatonton was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe going south on Jefferson Street at the same time that Beall was trying to turn.
The Tahoe ended up hitting the right side of Beall’s vehicle. The impact of the crash on Beall’s vehicle spun it around and sent it southbound into a utility pole on Jefferson Street.
The force also pushed the Tahoe onto Martin Luther King Jr. Drive where it collided with a stopped 2017 Nissan Versa Note.
The driver of the Versa was identified as Melba Minter. The impact from the Tahoe caused the Versa to turn onto its side. The Versa came to rest on the sidewalk and the Tahoe behind it.
Beall was transported from the scene to Navicent Health Baldwin due to the severity of the injuries she sustained in the accident.
Edwards, Minter, and a 16-year-old passenger were taken to Navicent Health Medical Center for the injuries they sustained during the accident.
Beall died while she was at the hospital receiving treatment.
Beall was a lifelong resident of Milledgeville and a strong influence in the community. She and her husband owned a store in the community prior to his death.
Witnesses at the accident have stated that the light was green for Beall, but she did not have the turn arrow giving her the right-of-way. The Georgia State Patrol has expressed that the investigation is still ongoing.
