The criminal charges Lira faces likely will require her to obtain the services of a drunk driving attorney.
Authorities at about 3:30 p.m. Monday were called to the intersection of Buckeye Road and 35th Avenue to investigate a report of a vehicle that had struck a metal fence. Officers arriving on the scene reported smelling alcohol. They also allegedly found empty bottles inside the vehicle Lira had been driving.
A baby girl, who had been placed in a damaged car seat and apparently left unrestrained in the back of the vehicle, was pulled from the car by a witness, police said. The infant currently is in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Services, according to reports from local media outlets.
Lira had difficult standing while speaking with officers and allegedly refused to take a breath test to determine her blood-alcohol concentration, the Associated Press reported. She also told officers she had consumed some alcohol prior to the crash.
Police did not say Tuesday what they believe led Lira to lose control of the vehicle and crash into the fence. The criminal charges she faces likely will force her to hire a drunk driving attorney, if she has not already done so.
