Smith approached the vehicle and spotted the victim and a female sitting inside. The officer made contact with the two and asked them to remain in the car. However, Munoz exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
The Westwood resident ran through the shrubbery between the parking lot and Dana Drive and headed into heavy traffic on the westbound lane. An oncoming SUV struck him, and officer Nicole Rempfer secured him with cuffs before calling for an ambulance.
The accident report revealed that medics took Munoz to Mercy Medical Center to treat his injuries. The police released him from custody at the hospital as his injuries prevented them from booking him into the Shasta County Jail.
The officers searched the Toyota and found an open container of alcohol, methamphetamine, and other drug paraphernalia. The man faces charges of possessing a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
He also faces possession of an open container in a vehicle and a parole violation. The woman in the car cooperated with the police, and they released her after an interview.
