The California Highway Patrol said that the accident occurred precisely near the Olney Family Vineyard, Cave, and Winery at 2253 Dry Creek Road, Napa. Peter Olney, 27, was in the ill-fated vehicle but managed to survive.
CHP said that at about 3:45 a.m., the Toyota, which was heading east, left the road, went down the embankment, and ended up in the pond. The vehicle became fully submerged, but Olney, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was able to crawl out.
It took the effort of first responders to get Goforth out of the vehicle. He was also not wearing a seatbelt and was already dead before the officials could get him out. At 4:52 a.m., the medics at the scene pronounced the man dead.
The CHP said that alcohol appeared to be a factor in the accident. Impaired driving is the cause of some of the accidents in Napa, as indicated in accident reports. Napa County law requires that in such cases, the coroner should carry out an autopsy to determine the cause of death, and follow it with a toxicology test.
