Just as Whittaker reached the 24.5 milepost, he appears to have lost control of the vehicle. The pickup veered off towards the right side of the road. This brought the passenger side of the vehicle into a collision with the guardrail end. The impact of the collision then caused the vehicle to veer back and across the eastbound lanes. It finally came to rest when it reached the center median.
No other persons or vehicles were involved in the crash. The accident was reported to the authorities just after 8:30 a.m. Once the first responders arrived on the scene of the crash, Whittaker was provided primary medical aid. He was then taken to a local hospital for further treatment. His injuries are reported as non-life-threatening.
Preliminary investigations by the ISP found that it was negligence on the part of Delmar E. Whittaker that caused the incident. It isn’t clear yet whether Whittaker was speeding at the time. As per the accident reports, ISP has issued Whittaker a citation for improper lane use.
