The vehicle was driving south on US 87 in the left lane when it entered the center median for unknown reasons. The driver tried to correct the car and get it back on the roadway but ended up losing control. He swerved back into the center median, and went into the northbound lanes.
The car ended up going into the ditch on the northside of the road and rolled continuously before resting on the service road, partially blocking it. Steele sustained severe wounds and passed away at the scene, with the unnamed driver surviving with minor injuries.
The DSP added in the accident report that neither the deceased nor the driver were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. There is no additional information at this time, and the investigation into the cause of the crash remains active.
The authorities used the fatal crash to reiterate the significance of drivers and passengers wearing seat belts when on the road. Failure to do so is a traffic offense, and offenders will receive a ticket and pay a fine.
