At just after 4:00 p.m. Stewart lost control of the truck in the eastbound lane on Islands Highway.
As the right-side tires left the road, Stewart tried to correct the vehicle. He ended up over correcting and crossed the roadway.
After leaving the road on the opposite side, he crashed into a palm tree.
There were two other passengers in the truck with Stewart. The front passenger suffered a broken wrist from the accident. The back passenger sustained no injuries.
Stewart was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
The investigation into the accident did not reveal if Stewart was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident. A head-on collision with a palm tree would be the same as any other tree-related collision.
If the force was substantial enough, head injuries could be caused because of the impact. There was nothing in the report that indicated Stewart was ejected from the vehicle. Ejections are often common in head-on collisions, especially when no seatbelt is worn.
The names of the other two victims in the accident have not been released. The wrist break could be a result of holding themselves in place during the accident.
The police did not state that the airbags went off during the collision. There is substantial front-end damage shown in the picture released by the media. The passenger side window has been deliberately covered up, so it is not possible to know if the airbags deployed.
The police are still investigating the accident to find out why Stewart lost control of the vehicle in the first place.
