An accident on southbound Antelope Valley Freeway in Palmdale on the morning of March 5, has police searching for a semi missing a back bumper.
35-year-old Leonard Mompeller was driving a GMC pickup truck on the Antelope Valley Freeway near Avenue O around 3 a.m. Thursday morning.

Mompeller ended up rear-ending a semi-truck that was in front of him on the freeway. The semi-truck did not stop after the accident occurred. Police say that Mompeller’s truck did damage to the back end of the semi, and the bumper from the semi’s trailer was ripped off during the accident.
Mompeller was pronounced dead that the scene of the accident by the California Highway Patrol. He suffered extensive injuries in the rear-end collision.
Two lanes of the freeway were blocked while the investigation into the scene was conducted. They reopened shortly after 6 a.m.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, but they have not ruled out speed as a contributing factor to the collision. There was not any mention of drugs or alcohol being a factor, however, it has not been ruled out at this time. They are calling the investigation ongoing.
The California Highway Patrol is interested in finding the driver of the semi-truck. They spent time searching for the truck but had no luck in locating it.
