According to CHP records, the victim was riding on a motorized mobility scooter on a sidewalk on the west side of Manzanita. At the same time, a GMC pickup truck was traveling through the north traffic lanes of the roadway. The vehicle, for reasons under investigation, suddenly drifted into the south lanes of travel, jumped the sidewalk, and collided with the elderly man riding the scooter.
Investigative findings indicated that the pickup then struck an electric pole located off the road. The impact caused the pole to break off. The truck eventually came to rest only after crashing into a Toyota Camry pulling out of the driveway according to the car accident reports.
While none of the vehicles’ occupants got harmed, the scooter rider sustained fatal injuries, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Gary Hurlbut, 66, of Carmichael. They also identified the suspect as 30-year-old Adrian Phillip Almaraz, of Fair Oaks.
Detectives believe Almaraz was under the influence when he struck Hurlbut. They arrested him and booked him into the Sacramento County Jail on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death and vehicular manslaughter. He also faces charges of driving while license revoked or suspended, and hit-and-run causing property damage. Jail records confirm his bail as $300,000.
