An accident report from Tuesday, May 5th, involved a resident of Fresno, California. The authorities said that Robert Ekberg, 57, was involved in a single-vehicle crash that occurred on Highway 49 near Harmony Lane.
The CHP’s preliminary report showed that Ekberg was driving a logging truck on the highway, heading north on 49. The man was driving at about 60 miles per hour when for unknown reasons, he veered across the southbound lanes and went up an embankment.

The truck ended up on its side, but Ekberg did not sustain any injury. The investigators said that 26 tons of log ended up on the roadway leading to the closure of the lanes for about eight hours. They reopened the road after the cleaning crew cleared the logs.
Trucks carrying logs are known to crash for several avoidable reasons. They include poor maintenance of the trucks, and improper loading of the timber on the vehicle; the latter can cause a rollover accident when the drive tries to make a turn.
Another includes driver’s error, which covers but is not limited to carelessness, impairment, and fatigue. Traffic officials advise motorists carrying logs to ensure they inspect and maintain their vehicles regularly to prevent brake failures, steering problems, faulty tail lights, and worn tires.
Drivers should also ensure they drive carefully, avoid taking turns too fast, avoid blindspots, fasten the logs properly, and maintain the speed limit. When a crash occurs, file an accident report immediately to enable the cleaning crew to arrive on time to clear the logs from the road.
