The motorist allegedly traveled at top speed when he left the roadway’s northbound lane into the southbound lane. It entered into the path of the 1997 Honda Civic driven by Castaneda, and the two collided. The force of the collision made the two cars spin out of control.
The victim’s wrecked car left him trapped inside, and first responders had to extricate him. Castaneda was unresponsive when the emergency workers freed him from the vehicle, and they pronounced him dead. Perez was uninjured from the collision, and the police said his speed and distracted driving contributed to the incident.
Officers later placed the man under arrest on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, probation violations, and driving with a suspended license. His bail bond is $85,000. The investigation into the collision remains active.
It takes a distracted driver about three seconds to crash, and speed is one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths. Drivers must desist from the two for their safety, other road users, and to prevent adverse legal consequences.
