The trio, who were bringing cleaning supplies to an offshore ship, encountered a wake from a passing vessel, that caused the starboard side of the boat to take on water. The sheriff’s office said that the latter possibly caused the cargo to shift weight.
The boat overturned and emptied all the occupants into the water. A crew from a tugboat performed a rescue mission; they succeeded in getting Kahn and his colleagues out of the water. The man was unresponsive at the time, and the rescuers took him to Port Neches Riverfront Park boat ramp.
From there, the Acadian EMS took the victim to a local hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. The accident report did not provide details on the condition of the deceased’s colleagues. The investigation is ongoing and headed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Boating accidents are not entirely uncommon, and safety tips include bringing the proper life jackets and having safety gear onboard. Check the weather forecast beforehand, don’t add excess load, check for harmful fumes, and follow appropriate anchoring and docking procedures.
