The county sheriff’s office dispatched deputies to the accident scene after receiving a report of an out-of-control tractor, with no driver, going around in circles in an open field. They found Whitcomb, who drove the tractor earlier, lying a short distance away from the heavy-duty vehicle, unresponsive.

Sheriff’s Lt. Joel Roon said that the man had severe injuries, and Dutton firefighters worked to help the victim. While the firemen were doing the latter, the tractor broke free from an implement it was pulling, ran it over, and continued across the field until it crashed into a DFD Ford F-550.

The tractor went on to push the vehicle into an embankment, where it stalled. The police believe that the heavy-duty vehicle struck Whitcomb while he operated it. The man died at the scene, and the accident report showed that no one else was hurt.

The accident report also showed that police have not uncovered what caused the tractor to go out of control. The investigation into the tragic event is ongoing, and they will provide updates at a later date.
