The preliminary accident report showed that Mattie broadsided the other vehicle driven by an unnamed 18-year-old male from Antioch while exiting the eastbound lane. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The younger man was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. There were two other people in the car with Mattie, who sustained minor injuries, and were treated at the scene.
Most traffic collisions occur when a driver disobeys traffic laws and runs red lights. Drivers who do the latter cause fatalities because of the side-impact of cars at high speed.
Another reason is drivers ignoring stop signs and failing to yield. It often leads to rollover accidents, and the best way to prevent it is by paying close attention to the road, with drivers ensuring they have the right of way before going through an intersection.
Different liabilities arise when an accident occurs, and the offending driver often makes restitution. However, the driver who caused an accident can die from it, and when that happens, California law provides that a victim can bring an action against his or her estate.
The latter is usually a civil action for wrongful death or personal injury, and the court will grant restitution to the extent of the damage suffered.
