A man from Goleta, Santa Barbara County, California, is facing a personal injury lawsuit for his dogs’ attack on a neighbor. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office took Armando Coronado, 24, into custody on Sunday, April 12th.

The preliminary investigation by deputies from the sheriff’s office uncovered that two dogs belonging to Coronado broke through a fence and viciously attacked a neighbor, name withheld. The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. on San Milano Drive.

The sheriff’s spokeswoman, Raquel Zicks, said in a press release that a resident in the area secured the dogs before the deputies arrived. Witnesses then directed the officers to the address of the resident and informed them that the canines had behaved aggressively before.

The police did not disclose the extent of the injuries the victim suffered or the condition he or she is in. They arrested Coronado on suspicion of possession of a mischievous animal that caused serious bodily harm.

Dog bite incidents are not entirely uncommon in California and the United States. In 2018, there were approximately 36 dog-bite related fatalities in the US. Between 2005 and 2018, canines killed about 471 people, with pit bulls and rottweilers contributing to 76% of the deaths.

When a dog attacks a person, the owner assumes responsibility, especially if the canine has a history of aggressive behavior. Asides from the charges the person will face from the authorities, the victim can bring a personal injury lawsuit to recover damages.

When that happens, both the victim and the dog owner would need to hire a personal injury attorney for legal advice and representation.
