Drugs, alcohol, do not seem to have factored in the accident, and the authorities did not reveal on whose side the liability lies. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and the public will be updated once the police uncover more facts.
Liability arises from the negligence of the person who causes an accident. The degree of accountability and harm suffered, as well as the facts of the accidents, and the conduct of the offending driver determines the lawsuit he or she will face.
The common offenses that arise from an accident are hit-and-run charges, also called leaving the scene of an accident, and driving under the influence. The third is vehicular manslaughter, and all three offenses carry prison time.
The latter is as low as a year in county jail to as high as ten years in a state prison. Also, a person can face a wrongful death or personal injury civil suit and pay monetary compensation.
