The California Highway Patrol estimates that Singh’s speed at the time of the accident was around 60 miles per hour when he attempted to pass the vehicle.
At the same time, heading south on the highway was 18-year-old Amber Calonder from Knights Landing.
When Singh entered the southbound lane to try and pass the commercial vehicle, he caused a head-on collision with Calonder.
Both vehicles ended up on the west shoulder of the highway.
Emergency personnel transported Singh to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.
Calonder was also transported to the hospital with moderate injuries sustained in the collision.
The California Highway Patrol does not suspect that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.
Based on maps of the area where the accident occurred, there are two spots on Highway 113 that intersect with Knights Road. In one of the areas, there is a broken yellow line to allow passing, but on the rest of the road, it is a double yellow line.
It is possible that given the time of day, Singh simply did not see Calonder’s car when he attempted to pass.
In recent years, residents of Knights Landing have requested that safety measures be implemented on Highway 113. There have been multiple accidents along the roadway.
Requests made in the past have been for the road department to repaint the striping, add signage, and put up a guardrail. There has been no indication that all of these requests have been met.
