The Texas Department of Public Safety said that for unknown reasons, the man veered off the road, struck several trees, and lost control at a curve. The call about the accident came in a little before 2 a.m., and troopers went to the scene to investigate.
The authorities believe that Murphy was driving at top speed, which contributed to the crash. He sustained severe wounds, and the medics took him with a road ambulance to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
The man passed away while receiving treatment at about 4 p.m. that same day. The DSP said that Murphy was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, and they are still investigating to determine the cause.
Accident reports show that over speeding is one of the most common causes of accidents in Texas. The state’s Department of Transportation sets the speed limit for each roadway and advises motorists to follow them.
The legal limit is 70 miles per hour for highways, but the Texas Transportation Commission established 75 mph, or 80 and 85 mph for state routes designed to accommodate the speed. It is also permitted within ten counties on Interstate 10 and Interstate 20.
