Martin was headed home to Camarillo eastbound on 3rd Street from a day of work when the truck, which was headed westbound on 3rd Street, turned left in front of him. The fatal crash happened on the 1200 block of 3rd, between Marquita Street and Campton Drive, less than a mile from the Oxnard Police station.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the afternoon accident, and readily identified Martin. Hospital staff pronounced Martin dead after he was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A procession escorted Martin’s body to the county coroner’s office Wednesday evening, and the flag-draped coffin was carried into a hearse at the Ventura County Medical Center. The last time the department mourned an officer was in 1996.

Martin did a variety of assignments with the department, including patrol and property crimes investigation. At the current time, he was assigned as a resource officer to Hueneme High School. He’d just left school an hour before the crash.

Martin’s brother is also an officer with the Oxnard Police Department.

He is survived by a wife and three children, ages 20, 17, and 14.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
