A preliminary investigation conducted when the lawmen arrived at the scene uncovered that a man identified as Vicente Aguirre, 74, of Odessa, was driving the 18-wheeler. He was traveling east in the outside lane of the highway, precisely on the 5900-block of east IH-20.
At the same time, Hernandez, driving a Nissan Sentra, was traveling east on the inside lane of the same roadway. The police said that the woman attempted to make an unsafe lane change, and ended up getting hit by the 18-wheeler.
Paramedics took Hernandez to a local hospital where she passed away despite the best effort of doctors. The accident report did not reveal if Aguirre sustained any wounds from the crash.
The authorities closed down the eastbound lanes of the interstate while investigators conducted their preliminary findings and cleared the road of debris. Drivers used alternative routes until traffic officials reopened the roadway.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and there’s no additional information at this time.
