Preliminary reports showed the fatal victim was the driver and sole occupant of an Infiniti coupe driving eastbound on Lakeview Avenue. For unknown reasons, the vehicle, heading to Lowell from Dracut at the time, swayed sideways and collided with a telephone pole stationed off the roadway near Ottawa Street.
The emergency response team arrived a few minutes later and tried to rescue the accident victim. However, Cortijo succumbed to his fatal injuries before he could receive medical aid, the accident reports affirmed.
Detectives did not immediately establish what caused Cortijo’s vehicle to drive off the road and hit the telephone pole, leasing to his death. A possible accident reconstruction scene, conducted by the LPD, may unveil new findings.
An investigation into the crash is still in the works, headed by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Lowell Police Department.
