The preliminary accident report by the California Highway Patrol showed that Herbst was driving a white Honda sedan when he suddenly swerved off the roadway and crashed the vehicle. Bryan Hunt, an officer with the CHP said the deceased was traveling at 70 mph in the first lane.
The CHP officer believes that the speed caused Herbst to drift into the right shoulder, where he struck a barbed-wire fence, and a power pole. The crash caused smoke to come out of the Honda, and the front was significantly wrecked.
First responders at the scene took the man to the Kern County Medical Center with significant injuries, but he died soon after he arrived at the hospital. Hunt also believes that an underlying medical condition could have contributed to the fatal accident.
The CHP had the help of the Kern County Fire Department during the preliminary investigation at the scene of the crash. PG&E also came to check the damage done to the power pole, and the accident remains under investigation.
The sheriff’s office and the CHP have advised drivers to drive at the speed limit, and only get behind the wheel when they are feeling okay mentally and physically.
