The preliminary investigation suggests Villanueve at about 5 p.m. was driving his all-terrain cycle east on Devonshire Road, approaching 63rd Drive. Then, for reasons not yet made clear by car accident reports, Villanueva allegedly drove onto the sidewalk, causing the ATC to overturn.
Villanueva was thrown from the vehicle during the wreck, police said. Authorities have not indicated any additional vehicles were involved in the incident.
Villanueva was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious head trauma in the crash, authorities reported. Emergency medical personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
Unlike the more-common all-terrain vehicles, all-terrain cycles typically have just three wheels. Police did not say whether Villanueva was legally permitted to operate that type of vehicle in the area.
Few additional details about the crash were released Sunday evening. Investigators have not said whether they believe Villanueva was intoxicated or speeding before he overturned his vehicle. It also was not clear whether Villanueva drove onto the sidewalk purposely.
The incident remains under investigation by the Phoenix Police Department. Additional car accident reports are forthcoming.
