The incident took place at about 9:45 pm on Friday, March 13, off Miratech Drive in the Sorrento Valley area. Officers of the San Diego County Police Department reported that the three young adults were travelling south through Camino Santa Fe prior to the traffic accident.
Just as they neared the Miratech Drive, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing the pickup to drift off the road, making several turns before going over the centre divider.
The pickup truck, driven by an eighteen-year-old woman, crashed into a pine tree on its path and went ablaze immediately.
Emergency responders found the wrecked car embedded in a tree at the 9900 block, with four severely injured occupants. Three of the passengers were pronounced dead on the scene, while the pickup operator sustained third-degree burns, but survived the wreckage.
The surviving commuter was rushed to a burn centre by paramedics, where she remains in critical condition. Neither drug nor alcohol impairment was suspected to have contributed to the accident.
The tragic incident is being investigated by the police to ascertain the cause of the crash.
