Investigations carried out at the site indicated that the fatal victim was traveling as a passenger in the vehicle when the crash happened. The car in question, driven by 21-year-old Austin Price, of Dowagiac, was moving through the eastbound lanes on Church Road, in the Volinia Township. Price lost control of the car, which drifted to the side of the road and rolled over into a tree.
The motorist, and his two passengers including 21-year-old Michael Mortimore, of Dowagiac, and 22-year-old Nicolas Carey, also of Dowagiac, suffered major injuries. First responders pronounced Mortimore dead upon their arrival and conveyed Price and Carey to a medical center in Kalamazoo, named Bronson Hospital.
Drugs and alcohol appeared to have contributed to the crash, but the confirmatory results are still pending.
