Preliminary investigations revealed the fatal victim was driving a Kia Sorento, along the southbound traffic lanes of Highway 171, which was wet from the rain. As a result of the wet roadway, the Kia lost traction, and skidded forward, out of control. Unable to bring the car to rest, the 22-year-old driver, identified as Meagan Lee, of Garland, let her car cross the dividing line, into oncoming traffic.
A northbound semi-tractor and trailer, heading north on 171 struck the Kia almost immediately as it veered into its path. The impact sent the smaller car spinning off the shoulder of the road, ejecting Lee in the process before eventually coming to rest.
First responders pronounced Lee dead when they arrived, from fatal injuries sustained. Meanwhile, 70-year-old Billy Jones, of Chico, who was operating the big rig when the crash happened, went unharmed. No one else appeared to have been present in either of the vehicles at the time.
The DPS is still investigating the crash and would release additional information in the updated accident reports.
