The investigators with the Decatur Police Department said Smith collided with a car driven by a 30-year-old Decatur man, and he was not wearing a helmet. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found the victim unresponsive and transported him to Decatur Memorial Hospital.
The preliminary investigation uncovered that Smith was heading east on Grand on his motorcycle, while the car was northbound on Woodford. The reason for the collision remains elusive, but the investigation is ongoing. The DPD Fatal Accident Investigation Team is heading it, and they will release an update at the end of their inquiry.
Helmets go a long way in preventing severe head injuries when a motorcycle accident occurs. Riders should always have on the headcover with a US-DOT sticker and wear protective apparel. Additionally, Illinois motorcycle traffic laws provide that cyclists must obey all traffic laws, signs, and signals.
Motorcyclists are prohibited from passing between two other vehicles going in the same direction unless there’s an obstructed traffic lane to permit safe passage. Ride carefully at all times, and pay attention to road conditions.
