Motor vehicle accidents or traffic collision occurs when a vehicle collides with another car, pedestrian, animal, road debris, or stationary obstruction like a tree, pole, or building. Accidents often result in injury, disability, death, and property damage, as well as financial costs to both society and the individuals involved.
Several factors contribute to the risk of collisions, including vehicle design, speed of operation, road design, road environment, and driving skills. It also covers impairment due to alcohol or drugs, behavior, notably distracted driving, speeding, and street racing.
Millions of people are involved in accidents daily, and traffic and law enforcement authorities advise that road users must operate their vehicles with utmost care. Safety tips for drivers include driving without impairment, scanning the road 12 seconds ahead, and looking out for red-light runners and kids.
Obey stop signs and traffic lights and wait for the light to turn green before crossing intersections. Use exit and turn signs, check the vehicle for fluid leakage, and frequently maintain it.
