The preliminary investigation uncovered that Raja Whitfield, a 26-year-old San Francisco resident, struck Berman at a crosswalk. The victim sustained severe wounds, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver suffered minor injuries and received treatment in a hospital.
The police then placed the man under arrest for vehicular homicide, reckless driving, entering a crosswalk on a red signal, and speeding. Drugs or alcohol are not factors in the occurrence. The investigation remains active.
Pedestrian accidents are one of the common causes of crash-related deaths in California. Accidents of this nature are caused by drivers going over the speed limit, failing to yield to pedestrians, driving recklessly, and running red lights and stop signs.
Jaywalking and dangerous behaviors by pedestrians also lead to this type of occurrence. Drivers who are guilty of any of the above would face a vehicular manslaughter charge in addition to the traffic offenses. A guilty verdict means four to six years imprisonment and payment of fines for the offender.
