The accident report revealed that one of the boys died at the scene, while medics took the other to a local hospital, where he passed away hours later. The sheriff’s department Capt. Salvador Becerra said that Mark and Jacob’s mother saw two cars coming at them at top speed.
The captain noted that she could only grab one child from a razor scooter, and another child in a stroller as the cars entered the intersection. The driver of the vehicle that struck the victims, Rebecca Grossman, 57, fled the crash site.
Deputies found her car, a white Mercedes, a half-mile away. They arrested the suspect on two counts of vehicular manslaughter and remanded her on a $2 million bail bond. Grossman is the founder and chair of the Grossman Burn Foundation; she is recognized for her humanitarian work across the world.
The police said she was under the influence when the crash happened, and Beccera added that the accident was avoidable if the woman used a taxi or called a friend. The LACSO is searching for the second vehicle, and anyone involved should contact the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station traffic investigators.
