A man working the processing line of Foster Farms turkey plant in Turlock, California, died in an accident on Monday, April 27th, an accident report states. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified him as Luis Salazar, 30.
The preliminary investigation conducted by the state’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health revealed that Salazar fell asleep several times while working on the production line. In one of those weak moments, he got pulled into the conveyor.

Cal-OSHA is heading the investigation and has not revealed additional information on the deceased. Ira Brill, the vice-president of communications of the company with its headquarters in Livingstone, said Salazar was outside labor.
The man was hired by an outside contractor and was one of the 1500 employees working at the plant located in the 550-block of F Street. Brill said that the company regrets the loss of the victim’s life. Foster Farms is working with local law enforcement and Cal-OSHA representatives in their investigation.
The United States Department of Labor notes that there are significant safety and health hazards in poultry processing plants. The dangers, as seen in accident reports, include exposure to high noise levels, dangerous equipment, slippery floors, hazardous chemicals, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Standard hazard control measures include implementing an effective ergonomics program and hearing conservative plans. Effective maintenance of electrical equipment, providing the required personal protective equipment and guarding dangerous machinery.
Another is following OSHA’s process safety management standard to protect workers from accidental leaks or ammonia. Others are maintaining floors to prevent falls and initiating OSHA’s hazard communication standard.
