There was one other car that was involved in the collision, a mother and son, but their names were not disclosed. There was no indication that they were seriously injured in the accident.

Ghrist is currently listed in critical conditions due to the severity of the injuries she sustained in the collision caused by the minor driving the truck.

The accident is the result of a crime that occurred the night before when the 14-year-old and other minors stole the truck of a man who had gone into Halal Guys at 11700 Westheimer. The owner of the truck stated that he had gone into the store and left the truck running.

Before he knew what happened, the two “suspicious” people outside had gotten in and were backing the truck out of the parking spot. The owner called the police and reported the truck as stolen.

On Monday afternoon an off-duty police officer who was on his way home spotted a truck that struck him as odd near the 1500 block of Sam Houston Parkway. He noticed that there was a minor driving and called it in. Dispatch informed him that the truck had been stolen the night before.

To try to pull over the truck, the off-duty police officer turned on his lights and attempted a traffic stop on the truck.

The 14-year-old driver was spooked and increased their speed to what would be considered a dangerous level. This was when the truck entered the intersection and hit the two other vehicles.

The Harris County Juvenile Probation Authority currently has custody of the minors that are responsible for the theft and subsequent accident. The minor driver is also facing charges in conjunction with the accident and injuries of Ghrist.
