The preliminary report was that Mokhtari was walking east in the crosswalk on Grand Central. A taxi that was driving northbound on Grand Central ran through a red light. The taxi, which was identified as a 2018 Toyota Prius, was being driven by Zerihun Lakew.
After running the red light, Lakew then hit a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck that had been driving west on Charleston.
The Prius began to spin, losing control. It struck Mokhtari while she was in the crosswalk.
Witness statements verified that both the truck and the woman had the right-of-way. Neither driver was found to be impaired at the time of the accident.
Lakew received minor injuries in the accident. The driver of the Chevrolet truck, whose name has not been released, was not injured.
Emergency personnel took Mokhtari from the scene of the accident to University Medical Center. She died while she was receiving treatment for her injuries.
Mokhtari’s death is the 19th traffic fatality that Metro has had to investigate so far this year.
As of Saturday night, Lakew had not been cited for the accident. Based on the witness testimony, he could be facing charges for negligence for disregarding the red light. It was his negligence that started the chain of events leading up to the death of Mokhtari.
The Las Vegas Police Department is still actively investigating the accident. Updates will be posted as they become available.
